The Grocery Retail Resilience & Innovation Award honors leaders, entrepreneurs, and organizations advancing innovations that help grocery stores serving low-income and historically underinvested communities become more resilient, sustainable, and profitable, while expanding access to affordable, nutritious food.

Why This Award Matters
Across the United States, millions of families live in communities where full-service grocery stores struggle to survive due to thin margins, fragmented supply chains, limited access to capital, and policy barriers.
Yet across the country, innovators are developing new models that challenge the assumption that grocery access and financial sustainability are incompatible.
This award recognizes those leaders who are proving that community-centered grocery retail can thrive through a diversity of solutions and helps elevate models with the potential to inspire replication, attract investment, and strengthen local food economies.

The award seeks to highlight and elevate innovations that:
Strengthen the economic viability of grocery retail in underserved communities
Improve access to affordable, nutritious food
Enhance supply chain resilience and efficiency
Introduce new business models, technologies, or financing approaches
Build stronger local food economies and community partnerships

Eligible applicants include:
Independent grocery retailers and operators
Entrepreneurs and startups
Technology innovators supporting grocery operations
Community development organizations
Food system investors or financial innovators
Public-private partnerships advancing grocery access
Additional Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be based in or serving communities in the United States
The innovation or initiative must be operational or piloted, not conceptual
Applicants must demonstrate clear benefits to independent grocery retailers and the communities they serve
Must be replicable or scalable to other communities.

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Impact — measurable improvement in food access and community wellbeing
Economic Sustainability — evidence the model can support financially stable grocery operations
Innovation — new approaches to long-standing challenges in grocery retail
Scalability — potential to replicate the model in other underserved communities
Equity and Inclusion — benefits to communities historically excluded from investment

Examples may include innovations that:
Reduce operating costs for neighborhood grocery stores
Improve last-mile distribution in rural or urban food deserts
Expand SNAP/WIC purchasing power through new platforms
Use data and technology to optimize inventory and reduce food waste
Develop cooperative purchasing or shared infrastructure models
Introduce financing structures that unlock capital for grocery stores
How to Apply
Applications must be completed online and submitted by May 1, 2026. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of philanthropic and industry leaders, and winners will be announced at the 2026 Grocery Retail for All Summit on June 18, 2026.
Please be prepared to provide applicant information, a description of your innovation, information about your community impact, your proposed use of funds, and any optional supporting documents.

What the Application Includes

Owner-operator name, business name, business address, contact email, and phone number.

Describe the support or programming you provide in your local community, including measurable outcomes or testimonials.

Describe your innovation and how it addresses key grocery retail challenges or advances industry standards.

Applicants may submit a business license or proof of ownership, letters of support, and relevant media or awards.
Key Dates
Terms and Conditions
Grant funds must be used for the purposes stated in the application
Recipients agree to participate in a follow-up interview and provide a brief report six months after receiving the award
The award is non-transferable and must be accepted by the business
All decisions from the selection panel are final
